What a Medicare Supplement plan covers

A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, pays some or all of the costs Original Medicare leaves behind, such as the Part A hospital deductible and the 20% Part B coinsurance. Our licensed agents in Fort Worth compare Medicare Supplement plans from the carriers we represent and help you pair one with a Part D drug plan, at no cost to you.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers most hospital and medical care, but it has deductibles, daily hospital charges and a 20% coinsurance with no yearly limit. A Medicare Supplement plan fills in those gaps. In 2026, for example, the Part A deductible is $1,736 per benefit period and the Part B deductible is $283 a year.

Helps pay for

  • The Part A hospital deductible and daily hospital coinsurance
  • The 20% Part B coinsurance for doctor visits, tests and outpatient care
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Blood, hospice coinsurance and, on most plans, foreign travel emergencies

Does not cover

  • Prescription drugs. You add a separate Medicare Part D drug plan.
  • Routine dental, vision or hearing care
  • Long-term custodial care
  • Care from providers who don’t accept Medicare
Same letter, same benefits. A Plan G from one insurance company covers exactly what a Plan G from another company covers. The difference is the price, how the price may rise over time, and the company’s service.

The most popular plans: G, N and High-Deductible G

These are the three plans most people compare.

Popular choice

Plan G

  • Covers everything Original Medicare leaves except the Part B deductible

  • No copays at the doctor or ER

Plan N

Usually a lower premium · small copays
  • Covers the Part A deductible and Part B coinsurance
  • Copays up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits without admission
  • Does not cover Part B excess charges
Good fit if you see the doctor a few times a year and want to save on premiums.

High-Deductible Plan G

Usually the lowest premium · $3,050 deductible in 2027
  • Same benefits as Plan G once you meet the deductible
  • You pay the first $3,050 of covered costs in 2027
  • The Part B deductible counts toward it
Good fit if you are healthy and want protection against big bills at a low monthly cost.

When to buy a Medicare Supplement plan

Timing matters more with Medigap than with any other Medicare coverage.

  1. Turn 65 and enroll in Part B

Your Medigap clock starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Part B.

  2. Your 6-month open enrollment

Any company must sell you any plan it offers, at standard rates, even with health conditions. This is the best time to buy.

  3. After the 6 months

Companies can ask health questions and may charge more or decline, unless you have a guaranteed-issue right, such as your Medicare Advantage plan leaving the area.

Medigap is not tied to the October 15 – December 7 Open Enrollment season, and you can apply any time of year. Leaving a Medicare Advantage plan this fall? Talk to us before you switch, so we can check whether you can get a Supplement plan first.

Under 65 with Medicare in Texas

If you have Medicare before 65 because of a disability, Texas gives you a six-month open enrollment period when you first enroll in Part B, and carriers must offer you Plan A on a guaranteed-issue basis (prices can be higher). When you turn 65 you get a new open enrollment period with access to every plan at age-65 rates.

How Medicare Supplement prices work in Texas

Your premium depends on:

Plan letterInsurance companyYour ageZIP codeGenderTobacco use

Companies also price plans in different ways: some raise premiums as you get older, others base the price on the age you were when you bought the plan. Because benefits are identical by letter, comparing several companies’ prices and their rate-increase history is the most useful thing you can do. We do that comparison for you.

Medicare Supplement questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most. Don’t see your question? Ask a licensed agent.

Does a Medicare Supplement plan cover prescriptions?

No. Medicare Supplement plans sold today do not include drug coverage. Most people add a separate Part D plan. In 2027 the yearly out-of-pocket cap for covered Part D drugs is $2,400.

Can I use my Medicare Supplement plan outside Texas?

Yes. You can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, and most plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.

Is Plan G or Plan N better?

Plan G costs more each month but leaves only the Part B deductible. Plan N costs less but has small copays and does not cover Part B excess charges. If you visit doctors often, Plan G is usually simpler; if you rarely go, Plan N can save money.

Can I switch Medicare Supplement plans later?

You can apply to change plans at any time, but outside your open enrollment period or a guaranteed-issue situation the new company may ask health questions. We can check your options before you cancel anything.

Does it cost anything to work with Schuder Insurance?

No. There is no charge for our help. Premiums are set by the insurance company and are the same whether you buy through us or directly.
